2067 Rate of Natural Increase

By the year 2067, the global rate of natural increase (RNI)—the difference between birth rates and death rates—will have declined significantly compared to the early 21st century. According to United Nations projections, the world’s RNI is expected to approach zero, signaling a near stabilization of global population. Africa will remain the continent with the highest RNI, driven by persistently high fertility rates in Sub-Saharan countries such as Niger and Nigeria, where RNIs may still exceed 2%. In contrast, Europe and East Asia—including countries like Germany, Italy, Japan, and China—will likely experience negative RNIs, as deaths outpace births due to aging populations and low fertility. Latin America and Southeast Asia will see their RNIs fall close to zero, with some countries like Brazil and Thailand possibly experiencing negative natural growth. Meanwhile, regions such as North America and Oceania will maintain slightly positive RNIs, largely sustained by higher fertility in certain populations and immigration. This divergence highlights a world where population growth is increasingly concentrated in a few regions, while many countries face demographic decline and the challenges of an aging society.
