Comoros Rate of Natural Increase

The rate of natural increase (RNI) in Comoros, which measures the difference between birth rates and death rates, is relatively high compared to many countries but moderate within its regional context. As of recent estimates, Comoros has an RNI of about 2.2% per year, reflecting a youthful population and relatively high fertility rates. When compared to its neighboring countries, such as Madagascar and Mozambique, Comoros’s RNI is slightly lower—Madagascar’s RNI is around 2.5%, and Mozambique’s is about 2.6%. In contrast, nearby island nations like Seychelles and Mauritius have much lower RNIs, both under 1%, due to lower birth rates and higher levels of development. Thus, while Comoros’s population is growing rapidly, it is not increasing as quickly as some of its mainland neighbors, but it is outpacing the more developed islands in the region.
