2006 Population

In 2006, the estimated world population was approximately 6.6 billion people. Asia was by far the most populous continent, home to about 60% of the global population, with China (over 1.3 billion) and India (over 1.1 billion) being the two most populous countries. Africa’s population was around 900 million, with Nigeria and Egypt leading in numbers. Europe had a population of about 730 million, with Russia, Germany, and France as its most populous countries. Latin America and the Caribbean accounted for roughly 560 million people, with Brazil and Mexico as regional giants. North America’s population was about 330 million, dominated by the United States (nearly 300 million) and Canada. Oceania, including Australia and the Pacific Islands, had the smallest population, totaling around 34 million. Population growth rates varied widely, with Africa and parts of Asia experiencing the fastest increases, while Europe’s population growth was slow or even declining in some countries.
