Bangladesh Population

Bangladesh has experienced rapid population growth over the past several decades, transforming it into one of the world's most densely populated countries. In 1971, at the time of its independence, the population was around 66 million; as of 2024, it has surpassed 170 million. While the growth rate has slowed in recent years due to successful family planning initiatives and increased literacy, the country continues to add millions of people each decade. This persistent growth places significant pressure on resources, infrastructure, and the environment, especially given Bangladesh's relatively small land area. Urbanization is accelerating, with cities like Dhaka expanding rapidly, further intensifying challenges related to housing, sanitation, and employment.
