Tajikistan has experienced steady population growth over the past several decades. Following independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the country’s population has increased from about 5.3 million to nearly 10 million by 2024. This growth is driven by a relatively high birth rate, with a fertility rate among the highest in Central Asia, and a youthful population structure—over a third of Tajikistan’s people are under 15 years old. While emigration, particularly labor migration to Russia, has somewhat offset population increases, the overall trend remains upward. Urbanization is also gradually rising, but the majority of Tajikistan’s population still lives in rural areas, contributing to ongoing demographic changes and challenges for economic development and infrastructure.
