1990 Population

In 1990, the world’s population was approximately 5.3 billion people. Asia was the most populous continent, home to about 60% of the global population, with China (over 1.1 billion) and India (around 850 million) as the two most populous countries. Africa’s population reached about 630 million, with Nigeria and Egypt among its largest countries. Europe had roughly 720 million people, with Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom as leading contributors. The Americas had a combined population of over 720 million, with the United States (about 250 million) and Brazil (around 150 million) as the largest nations in North and South America, respectively. Oceania, including Australia and the Pacific Islands, had a much smaller population of about 26 million. This era marked the beginning of rapid population growth in developing regions, while growth rates in Europe and parts of East Asia began to slow.
