In 1989, the world’s population was approximately 5.2 billion people. Asia was the most populous continent, home to over 3 billion people, with China and India alone accounting for more than 1.1 billion and 850 million inhabitants, respectively. Africa’s population was around 630 million, with Nigeria and Egypt as the most populous countries on the continent. Europe had about 720 million people, with Russia (then part of the Soviet Union) and Germany as its largest populations. North America’s population was about 400 million, with the United States accounting for roughly 247 million. Latin America and the Caribbean had around 420 million residents, with Brazil and Mexico leading in population size. Oceania was the least populated region, with about 25 million people, most living in Australia. The world in 1989 was marked by rapid population growth, especially in developing regions, setting the stage for continued demographic changes in the decades to follow.
