1982 Population

In 1982, the world’s population was estimated at approximately 4.6 billion people. Asia was by far the most populous continent, home to over half the global population, with China (around 1 billion) and India (about 700 million) as the two most populous countries. Africa’s population was around 500 million, with Nigeria and Egypt as leading population centers. Europe had about 700 million people, with the Soviet Union, Germany, and the United Kingdom as major contributors. North America’s population was roughly 370 million, dominated by the United States (around 230 million) and Mexico. Latin America and the Caribbean had about 350 million inhabitants, with Brazil as the largest country in the region. Oceania, including Australia and the Pacific Islands, had a much smaller population, totaling around 22 million. Population growth rates were particularly high in developing regions, setting the stage for significant demographic changes in the decades that followed.
