In 1960, the world’s population was approximately 3 billion people, marking a period of rapid growth following World War II. Asia was by far the most populous continent, home to over 1.6 billion people, with China (around 667 million) and India (about 450 million) as the two largest countries. Europe had roughly 605 million inhabitants, with the Soviet Union and Western European countries like Germany, the United Kingdom, and France being the most populous. Africa’s population was about 285 million, concentrated mainly in countries such as Nigeria and Egypt. North America had around 204 million people, with the United States accounting for about 180 million. Latin America and the Caribbean’s population was about 218 million, with Brazil and Mexico as the leading countries. Oceania remained sparsely populated, with around 16 million people, most residing in Australia and New Zealand. This demographic landscape set the stage for the dramatic population increases and urbanization that would follow in the subsequent decades.
