In 1958, the world’s population was estimated at approximately 2.9 billion people. Asia was already the most populous continent, home to over 1.5 billion individuals, with China (around 650 million) and India (about 400 million) being the largest countries by population. Europe’s population stood at roughly 600 million, with the Soviet Union, Germany, and the United Kingdom among its most populous nations. Africa’s population was about 230 million, concentrated in countries like Egypt and Nigeria. North America had around 200 million people, with the United States accounting for nearly 175 million. Latin America and the Caribbean together had close to 160 million inhabitants, led by Brazil and Mexico. Oceania, including Australia and the Pacific islands, had a much smaller population, totaling around 15 million. The global population was experiencing steady growth, particularly in Asia and Africa, setting the stage for the demographic changes of the later 20th century.
