By the year 2081, the world’s population is projected to have stabilized or begun a slow decline after peaking at around 10 to 11 billion people in the mid-21st century. Africa is expected to be the most populous continent, with countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo experiencing significant growth and Nigeria potentially becoming the third most populous country globally. Asia’s population, while still large, may have plateaued or started to decrease, particularly in China and India, as a result of aging populations and lower birth rates. Europe’s population is likely to have shrunk and aged considerably, with Eastern Europe and Russia seeing the most significant declines. The Americas will see modest growth, with the United States and Brazil maintaining large populations, though Latin America’s growth will have slowed. Oceania, led by Australia and Papua New Guinea, will continue to grow but remain the least populous continent. Urbanization will be a defining feature, with megacities across Africa and Asia dominating the demographic landscape.
