Top Lingonberry and Huckleberry Producing Countries

Lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) are primarily farmed in the Nordic countries—Sweden, Finland, and Norway—where the berry has been an integral part of traditional diets for centuries, as well as in Russia and parts of Canada. Historically, lingonberries were wild-harvested by indigenous and rural communities, with commercial cultivation only developing in the late 20th century as demand grew for their culinary and health benefits. Huckleberries, a term referring to several Vaccinium species native to North America, are most famously associated with the Pacific Northwest of the United States and western Canada, particularly in states like Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. Unlike lingonberries, huckleberries have resisted large-scale domestication due to their complex soil and symbiotic requirements, so most commercial supply still comes from wild harvesting. Both berries have a long history of use by indigenous peoples for food and medicine, and their transition into commercial markets reflects broader trends in the global appreciation of wild and specialty fruits.
