Top Mediterranean Slipper Lobster Fishing Countries

The Mediterranean slipper lobster (*Scyllarides latus*) is a distinctive, flattened crustacean found in rocky and sandy habitats across the Mediterranean Sea and parts of the eastern Atlantic. Recognizable by its broad, shovel-like antennae and robust body, this nocturnal species is highly valued for its sweet, delicate meat. The main countries engaged in slipper lobster fishing in the Mediterranean are Italy, Spain, Greece, and Turkey, where traditional small-scale fisheries target this species using traps, trammel nets, and sometimes by hand. Due to its high market value and localized abundance, the slipper lobster supports important artisanal fisheries, particularly in southern Italy and the Balearic Islands. However, overfishing and habitat degradation have led to population declines in some areas, prompting stricter regulations and conservation measures in several Mediterranean countries to ensure the sustainability of this prized resource.
