Top Gulf Grouper Fishing Countries

The Gulf grouper (*Mycteroperca jordani*) is a large, predatory fish native to the eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly the Gulf of California. Recognized for its robust body and mottled coloration, the Gulf grouper is highly prized for its firm, flavorful flesh, making it a sought-after target for both commercial and artisanal fisheries. Historically, Mexico has been the primary country harvesting Gulf grouper, with the majority of catches coming from the Mexican states bordering the Gulf of California, such as Sonora, Sinaloa, and Baja California. While small-scale fisheries also exist in the United States, particularly in southern California, Mexico overwhelmingly dominates the industry. Overfishing has severely depleted Gulf grouper populations, leading to stricter regulations and conservation efforts in recent years. Despite these challenges, the species remains an important economic resource for coastal communities in northwestern Mexico, where traditional fishing methods are still widely practiced.
