Montserrat Population

Montserrat, a small British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, has experienced significant fluctuations in its population growth over recent decades, primarily due to natural disasters. In the mid-1990s, the island's population was around 11,000, but the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano in 1995 led to the evacuation of much of the island, with the population dropping to fewer than 1,200 by the early 2000s. Since then, Montserrat’s population has seen slow and modest growth, largely through natural increase and limited immigration, reaching approximately 4,300 people as of 2023. Despite ongoing efforts to encourage resettlement and economic development, the population remains far below pre-eruption levels, and growth is constrained by the island's limited infrastructure and continued volcanic activity.
