Liberia has experienced steady population growth over the past several decades. According to the most recent estimates, Liberia’s population is approximately 5.5 million as of 2024, up from around 2.1 million in 1984. This growth is driven by a high birth rate, with a youthful population—over 60% of Liberians are under the age of 25. Despite the devastating impact of two civil wars between 1989 and 2003, which caused significant displacement and loss of life, the population has rebounded due to improved stability and ongoing urbanization, particularly in the capital, Monrovia. However, rapid population growth continues to put pressure on the country’s infrastructure, health care, and education systems.
