Estonia has experienced significant demographic changes over the past several decades, characterized by slow population growth and, more recently, a period of decline. Following independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Estonia saw a notable decrease in population due to emigration and low birth rates. The population fell from around 1.57 million in 1990 to approximately 1.3 million by the early 2020s. In recent years, however, the decline has stabilized, with slight growth attributed to immigration, particularly from Ukraine and other neighboring countries, and modest improvements in birth rates. Despite these positive trends, Estonia continues to face challenges related to an aging population and a relatively low natural increase, which present ongoing concerns for the country’s demographic future.
