Cambodia has experienced steady population growth over the past several decades. Following the devastation of the Khmer Rouge era in the late 1970s, the country’s population rebounded rapidly due to high birth rates and improved health conditions. According to the most recent estimates, Cambodia’s population reached approximately 17 million in 2023, up from about 13 million in 2000. This growth has been driven by a youthful demographic structure, with a large proportion of the population under the age of 25, and a declining mortality rate. However, the rate of population growth has begun to slow in recent years as fertility rates gradually decrease, reflecting broader regional trends in Southeast Asia. Despite this, Cambodia continues to face challenges and opportunities related to urbanization, labor force expansion, and the need for sustainable development to support its growing population.
