Albania Population

Albania has experienced significant demographic changes over the past several decades. During the mid-20th century, the country saw steady population growth, reaching a peak of around 3.3 million people in the early 1990s. However, following the fall of communism in 1991, Albania underwent a period of substantial emigration, with many citizens leaving for economic opportunities abroad, particularly in Italy and Greece. As a result, population growth slowed dramatically, and in recent years, Albania has faced a declining population due to continued emigration and a low birth rate. According to the latest estimates, Albania’s population stands at approximately 2.7 million in 2023, reflecting both the impact of outward migration and demographic trends common to much of Eastern Europe.
