Sorghum, a drought-tolerant cereal crop, is primarily farmed in countries such as the United States, Nigeria, India, Sudan, and Ethiopia, which together account for the majority of global production. Originating in northeastern Africa over 5,000 years ago, sorghum was domesticated by early agricultural communities for its resilience in arid environments and its versatile uses as food, fodder, and, more recently, biofuel. From Africa, sorghum spread to India and China along ancient trade routes, adapting to diverse climates and becoming a staple grain in semi-arid regions. In the 19th and 20th centuries, sorghum was introduced to the Americas, where it became an important crop for both human consumption and animal feed, particularly in the southern United States. Today, sorghum continues to play a crucial role in food security and sustainable agriculture, especially in regions facing water scarcity and climate variability.
