Pear (Pyrus spp.) cultivation has ancient roots, with evidence of domestication tracing back over 3,000 years in both China and regions around the Mediterranean. China is by far the world’s leading producer of pears today, accounting for more than two-thirds of global production, thanks to its long history of pear breeding and the popularity of Asian pear varieties. Other top pear-producing countries include Argentina, Italy, and the United States, particularly in regions like the Pacific Northwest. Pears spread westward from their origins in East Asia and the Caucasus through trade along the Silk Road and were cultivated by the Greeks and Romans, who improved varieties and spread them across Europe. Over centuries, selective breeding in Europe and Asia led to the diverse range of pears grown worldwide today, adapted to both temperate and subtropical climates.
