Top Avocado Producing Countries

Avocado (Persea americana) is a fruit native to south-central Mexico, where it was first cultivated by Mesoamerican peoples as early as 5000 BCE. The domestication and spread of avocado farming expanded throughout Central and South America, with the Spanish introducing the fruit to Europe and subsequently to Africa and Asia during the colonial period. Today, Mexico remains the world’s leading producer of avocados, accounting for over a third of global production, thanks to its ideal climate and established agricultural practices. Other top avocado-producing countries include the Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia, and Indonesia, each leveraging their tropical or subtropical climates to support large-scale cultivation. The global popularity of avocados, particularly in North America and Europe, has driven rapid expansion of avocado farming in recent decades, making it a significant export crop for several developing nations.
