Top Torpedo Rays Fishing Countries

Torpedo rays, belonging to the family Torpedinidae, are a group of electric rays known for their ability to generate electric shocks, which they use for defense and to stun prey. These bottom-dwelling fish inhabit temperate and tropical seas worldwide, with notable species like the common torpedo (Torpedo torpedo) and the Atlantic torpedo (Torpedo nobiliana). The fishing industry for torpedo rays is relatively small compared to other commercial rays, as their flesh is not highly valued and their electric organs make handling challenging. However, they are occasionally caught as bycatch in trawl and gillnet fisheries targeting other demersal species. The primary countries reporting catches of torpedo rays include Mediterranean nations such as Italy, Greece, and Turkey, as well as some North African countries like Tunisia and Morocco, where they are sometimes landed and sold locally. In addition, some Asian countries, including Japan and China, may catch torpedo rays incidentally, though they are not a major target species. Conservation concerns exist due to their low reproductive rates and vulnerability to overfishing, prompting some regional management measures.
