Top Spottail Shark Fishing Countries

The spottail shark (Carcharhinus sorrah), also known as the spot-tail or sorrah shark, is a medium-sized requiem shark recognizable by the prominent black tips and distinctive dark spots on its tail fin. Inhabiting shallow coastal waters of the Indo-West Pacific, this species is particularly abundant along the coasts of India, Indonesia, Australia, and the Persian Gulf. These countries are among the top spottail shark fishing nations, where the species is targeted by both artisanal and commercial fisheries for its meat, fins, and liver oil. India and Indonesia, with their extensive coastal fisheries, are especially significant contributors to global spottail shark landings. Overfishing and habitat degradation, however, have led to concerns about local population declines, prompting some countries to implement management measures to ensure the sustainability of this valuable marine resource.
