Top Spiky Oreo Fishing Countries

The Spiky Oreo (*Neocyttus rhomboidalis*) is a deep-sea fish known for its rough, spiny body and is typically found at depths of 200 to 1,300 meters in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly around the southern oceans near New Zealand, Australia, and the southern Atlantic. This species is often caught as part of deepwater trawl fisheries targeting mixed assemblages of oreos and other deep-sea species. New Zealand and Australia are the leading countries in the commercial harvest of Spiky Oreo, with well-developed deep-sea fishing fleets and management regimes. These countries export much of their catch, with the fish valued for its firm white flesh and use in frozen fillets. The Spiky Oreo fishery is regulated to prevent overfishing, as deep-sea species are slow-growing and vulnerable to depletion.
