The Sevan trout (Salmo ischchan), also known as the Ishkhan, is an endemic salmonid species native to Lake Sevan in Armenia. Renowned for its silvery body and prized for its delicate flavor, the Sevan trout has historically been a cornerstone of Armenia’s fisheries. Overfishing and environmental changes have drastically reduced its wild populations, making commercial harvesting rare today. Armenia remains the primary country associated with Sevan trout, with conservation efforts and aquaculture projects underway to restore stocks and support local demand. While neighboring countries such as Georgia and Iran have shown interest in rearing this species, Armenia is by far the most significant nation in both the historical and contemporary context of Sevan trout fishing and aquaculture.
