Top Rough Ray Fishing Countries

The rough ray (Raja radula), also known as the rough skate, is a species of cartilaginous fish found primarily in the Mediterranean Sea and parts of the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Characterized by its rough, spiny skin and flattened body, the rough ray inhabits shallow coastal waters, often on sandy or muddy bottoms. The main countries involved in the harvesting of rough ray are Italy, Spain, and Greece, where the species is caught both as a targeted fish and as bycatch in trawl and gillnet fisheries. These countries have long-standing traditions of ray and skate consumption, with the rough ray being sold fresh in local markets and sometimes exported. While not among the most commercially valuable rays, its presence in Mediterranean fisheries makes it an important species for small-scale fishers in the region. However, overfishing and habitat degradation have led to concerns about population declines, prompting some management measures and increased monitoring in recent years.
