Top Rhinofishes Not Elsewhere Included Fishing Countries

Rhinofishes, a colloquial term sometimes used for certain species within the family Ostraciidae (boxfishes) and related groups, are notable for their armored, box-like bodies and distinctive horn-like projections. While not a major global commercial fish, they are harvested in small quantities in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in parts of Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific. Countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam are among the top harvesters of these species, often caught as bycatch in artisanal and small-scale fisheries targeting reef fish. The fishing industry for rhinofishes is relatively minor compared to more commercially valuable species, with most of the catch consumed locally or sold in regional markets. These fish are valued for their unique appearance and sometimes used in traditional dishes or as ornamental curiosities. Despite their limited economic impact, sustainable management is important, as their slow growth and specialized habitats make them vulnerable to overfishing and habitat degradation.
