Top Longfin Squid Fishing Countries

The longfin squid (*Doryteuthis pealeii*) is a fast-growing, short-lived cephalopod found primarily in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, particularly along the eastern coast of North America. Characterized by its elongated fins that run along much of its mantle, this species is a key target for commercial fisheries due to its culinary value and use as bait. The United States is the leading country in longfin squid harvesting, with the majority of landings occurring in the waters off the northeastern states, especially Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Canada also participates in longfin squid fisheries, though at a smaller scale. The U.S. fishery is tightly managed to ensure sustainability, employing seasonal quotas and gear restrictions. While other countries may occasionally catch longfin squid as bycatch, the U.S. dominates the global industry, making it the principal supplier to both domestic and international markets.
