Garfish, belonging to the family Belonidae, are slender, elongated fish recognized for their long beak-like jaws and distinctive green bones. These surface-dwelling fish are commonly found in temperate and subtropical waters, with species such as the European garfish (Belone belone) being especially prominent. The top garfish fishing countries include Turkey, Greece, and Italy, where garfish are both commercially harvested and popular among recreational anglers, particularly in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. In these regions, garfish are valued for their delicate flavor and are often caught using traditional methods such as longlines, gillnets, and light fishing at night. While not a major global commercial species, garfish play an important role in local fisheries and coastal cuisines, especially in southern Europe and parts of western Asia.
