Top Broadnose Sevengill Shark Fishing Countries

The Broadnose Sevengill Shark (*Notorynchus cepedianus*) is a large, coastal shark distinguished by its seven gill slits—unusual among most sharks, which typically have five. Found in temperate waters of the southern hemisphere and parts of the northeast Pacific, this species inhabits shallow bays, estuaries, and continental shelves. The main countries involved in the commercial and recreational harvest of Broadnose Sevengill Sharks are Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand, and, to a lesser extent, Australia and the United States (particularly California). In Argentina and South Africa, the species is targeted for its meat and liver oil, while in New Zealand and California, it is often caught as bycatch or by recreational anglers. Overfishing and habitat degradation have led to population declines in some regions, prompting increased management and conservation efforts in several countries to ensure the sustainability of sevengill shark fisheries.
