Top Ascidiaceans Fishing Countries

Ascidiaceans, commonly known as sea squirts, are sessile marine invertebrates belonging to the class Ascidiacea. They are filter feeders found attached to rocks, docks, and other submerged surfaces in coastal waters worldwide. While not widely consumed globally, sea squirts are considered a delicacy in certain East Asian countries, particularly South Korea and Japan, where they are known as "meongge" and "hoya" respectively. South Korea is the leading country in the commercial harvesting and aquaculture of ascidiaceans, with extensive cultivation along its southern and western coasts. Japan also has a significant industry, especially in northern regions like Hokkaido. These countries have developed specialized methods for farming and harvesting sea squirts, which are exported regionally and consumed fresh, pickled, or as part of various traditional dishes. The ascidiacean fishing industry remains niche but is culturally and economically important in these regions.
