Top African Squid Fishing Countries

Squid, particularly species such as the Loligo vulgaris reynaudii (commonly known as chokka squid), are a valuable marine resource in African waters, especially along the continent’s southern and southwestern coasts. South Africa stands out as the top African country for squid fishing, with a well-established commercial chokka squid industry centered around the Eastern and Western Cape, where the species is harvested primarily using jigging techniques. Morocco is also a significant player, with its Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts supporting a robust cephalopod fishery that includes squid, alongside cuttlefish and octopus, much of which is exported to European and Asian markets. Namibia, with its nutrient-rich Benguela Current, supports a smaller but growing squid fishery as well. These countries benefit from both local consumption and lucrative export markets, making squid fishing an important economic activity, though the industry faces challenges such as resource management and environmental variability.
