Yemen, particularly in the southern regions that once formed the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), boasts a rich fishing tradition along its extensive Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden coastlines. The fishing industry is a vital sector for local livelihoods, especially as agriculture is limited by arid conditions. The top fish catches include sardines, mackerel, tuna (notably yellowfin and skipjack), cuttlefish, and various groupers. Historically, fishing in Yemen has been artisanal, with small boats and traditional gear, but during the period of the Yemen Democratic Republic (1967–1990), the government invested in modernizing the sector and developing fishing cooperatives. Despite challenges from conflict and limited infrastructure, Yemen’s fisheries remain an important source of food and export revenue, with the potential for sustainable growth if properly managed.
