Top Central African Republic Fish Catches

The fishing industry in the Central African Republic (CAR) is largely artisanal and centered on the country’s extensive river systems, particularly the Ubangi and Sangha Rivers. While not a major global producer, fishing plays a vital role in local food security and livelihoods. The most commonly caught species include tilapia (Oreochromis spp.), catfish (Clarias spp. and Synodontis spp.), Nile perch (Lates niloticus), and various species of Alestes and Hydrocynus (tigerfish). Historically, fishing in CAR has been practiced for subsistence and local markets, with traditional methods such as nets, traps, and lines. The industry faces challenges from overfishing, habitat degradation, and limited infrastructure, but remains an essential part of rural economies and diets in the country.
