Pineapple (Ananas comosus), native to South America—specifically the region between southern Brazil and Paraguay—was first domesticated by indigenous peoples long before European contact. The fruit was introduced to the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico, where it became an important crop. Following Christopher Columbus’s second voyage in 1493, pineapples were brought to Europe and, later, to Africa, India, and Southeast Asia by Spanish and Portuguese explorers and traders. Today, the top pineapple-producing countries are Costa Rica, the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia, with Costa Rica dominating global exports, especially to the United States and Europe. These countries benefit from tropical climates ideal for pineapple cultivation, and modern advancements in agricultural practices have made large-scale, year-round production possible, cementing pineapple’s place as a major global fruit crop.
