India is the world’s leading producer of mangoes, guavas, and mangosteens, with vast orchards spread across its tropical and subtropical regions; other top countries include China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Mexico. Mangoes (Mangifera indica) originated in South Asia over 4,000 years ago, spreading through trade routes to Southeast Asia, Africa, and eventually the Americas during the colonial era. Guavas (Psidium guajava), native to Central and South America, were cultivated by indigenous peoples before Spanish and Portuguese explorers introduced them to Asia and Africa in the 16th century. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), known as the “queen of fruits,” is native to the Malay Archipelago and was cultivated across Southeast Asia for centuries, prized for its sweet, tangy flavor. Today, these fruits are farmed extensively in tropical climates, with advances in horticulture and global trade making them widely available and economically significant in their top-producing countries.
