Grapes are one of the world’s most ancient and widely cultivated fruit crops, with evidence of their domestication dating back over 8,000 years in the Near East. The earliest grape cultivation is believed to have originated in the region between the Black Sea and Iran, spreading through the Mediterranean basin with the rise of ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, who further refined viticulture and winemaking techniques. Today, the top grape-producing countries are China, Italy, the United States, Spain, and Turkey. China leads global production, primarily for table grapes, while Italy, Spain, and the United States (notably California) are renowned for both table grapes and wine production. Turkey is a major producer of both fresh and dried grapes, such as raisins. The global spread and development of grape farming have been shaped by centuries of trade, migration, and cultural exchange, making grapes a staple in diets and economies around the world.
