Cashew nut farming originated in northeastern Brazil, where the cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale) is native. Portuguese colonists began cultivating and exporting cashews in the 16th century, introducing the crop to their colonies in India and Africa. Over time, India became a major center for cashew cultivation, particularly along its western coast, and developed significant processing industries. Today, the top cashew nut producing countries are Vietnam, India, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Nigeria, and Benin. Vietnam leads global production and is the largest exporter, thanks to advanced processing technologies. Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria have rapidly expanded their cashew sectors in recent decades, making West Africa a key player in the global market. The spread of cashew farming from Brazil across the tropics is a testament to its adaptability and the global demand for its nutritious nuts.
