Top Vendace Fishing Countries

The vendace (Coregonus albula) is a small, silvery freshwater whitefish native to northern Europe, particularly thriving in cold, deep lakes. Known for its delicate flavor and importance in regional cuisines, the vendace is primarily harvested in countries such as Finland, Sweden, and Russia. In Finland, vendace (locally called "muikku") is a staple in the Lake District, especially in Lake Saimaa and Lake Päijänne, where it supports both commercial and traditional fisheries. Sweden also maintains a significant vendace fishery, particularly along the northern Baltic coast, where vendace roe (löjrom) is considered a delicacy. Russia’s northwestern lakes, such as Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega, are important sources as well. The vendace fishing industry in these countries is characterized by a combination of small-scale artisanal operations and larger commercial enterprises, with sustainable management practices becoming increasingly important due to environmental concerns and fluctuating fish stocks.
