Top Twaite Shad Fishing Countries

The Twaite shad (Alosa fallax) is an anadromous fish species native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean and rivers of Western Europe, recognized for its silvery body and seasonal migrations from the sea into freshwater to spawn. Historically, Twaite shad supported significant fisheries in countries such as France, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom, where it was prized both for its delicate flesh and roe. France, particularly along the Loire and Garonne rivers, has been one of the leading countries in harvesting Twaite shad, with traditional fisheries dating back centuries. Portugal and Spain also have long-standing shad fishing traditions, especially in the Tagus and Minho rivers, respectively. However, overfishing, river damming, and habitat degradation have led to dramatic declines in Twaite shad populations, resulting in strict regulations or outright bans on commercial fishing in many areas. Today, while some artisanal and recreational fisheries persist, conservation efforts are prioritized across these countries to restore shad stocks and preserve this culturally significant species.
