Tarek, also known as Labeobarbus tarek, is a freshwater fish species endemic to Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Recognized for its silvery body and importance as a staple protein source, Tarek plays a significant role in local fisheries. The fishing industry surrounding Tarek is largely artisanal, with Ethiopian communities relying on traditional fishing methods to harvest this species for both subsistence and local markets. Ethiopia is the primary and virtually exclusive country harvesting Tarek, as the species is not found elsewhere. Efforts are ongoing to manage the fishery sustainably, given concerns over overfishing and habitat changes that threaten the delicate ecosystem of Lake Tana and the future of Tarek populations.
