Top Silvery Pout Fishing Countries

The silvery pout (Gadiculus argenteus) is a small, silvery member of the cod family, typically found in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, particularly around the coasts of Europe. This deep-water species is most abundant along the continental slopes and is often caught as bycatch in trawl fisheries targeting other demersal fish. The top countries engaged in silvery pout fishing are primarily European, with Spain, Portugal, and Norway leading the harvest due to their proximity to the species’ main habitats off the Iberian Peninsula and in the North Sea. While not a major commercial target, silvery pout is landed for fishmeal and sometimes for human consumption in local markets. The fishing industry for this species is relatively small compared to more prominent groundfish like cod or haddock, but it plays a supplementary role in the mixed-species fisheries of these northern European countries.
