Petrale sole (Eopsetta jordani) is a flatfish species prized for its delicate, mild-flavored flesh and is found primarily along the Pacific coast of North America. This demersal fish inhabits sandy bottoms from Baja California to the Bering Sea, with the highest abundances off the coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington. The United States is the leading country in petrale sole harvest, with its commercial fisheries centered on the West Coast, particularly Oregon and California, where the species is managed as part of the groundfish fishery. Canada also harvests petrale sole, albeit in smaller quantities, mainly from British Columbia waters. Both countries employ trawl fishing methods and have implemented strict management measures to ensure sustainable harvests, making the U.S. and Canada the principal nations in the petrale sole fishing industry.
