Top Atlantic Sharpnose Shark Fishing Countries

The Atlantic sharpnose shark (*Rhizoprionodon terraenovae*) is a small, slender shark species found in the western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from New Brunswick, Canada, to the southern Gulf of Mexico. Recognized for its long, pointed snout and distinctive white spots along its sides, this species is commonly targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries for its mild-flavored meat and as bycatch in shrimp trawl fisheries. The United States is the leading country in harvesting Atlantic sharpnose sharks, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico and along the southeastern Atlantic coast, where they are managed under strict quotas to ensure sustainability. Mexico also records significant landings, especially from its Gulf coast fisheries. While Canada’s harvest is minimal due to the species’ more southerly distribution, both the U.S. and Mexico play key roles in the management and monitoring of Atlantic sharpnose shark populations in the region.
