Top Atlantic Lizardfish Fishing Countries

The Atlantic lizardfish (*Synodus saurus*) is a slender, predatory marine fish found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles and the Mediterranean Sea down to West Africa. Recognized for its elongated body and sharp teeth, the Atlantic lizardfish inhabits sandy or muddy seabeds at depths ranging from shallow coastal waters to about 400 meters. Although not a primary target for commercial fisheries due to its modest size and limited market demand, it is often caught as bycatch in trawl and bottom fishing operations. The main countries harvesting Atlantic lizardfish are Mediterranean and North African nations such as Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco, where it may be used locally for food or fishmeal. In these regions, small-scale fisheries and artisanal fishers are most likely to land this species, reflecting its minor but persistent role in the broader fishing industry.
