Tajikistan’s fishing industry is relatively modest due to its mountainous terrain and limited natural water bodies, but it plays an important role in local food supply and livelihoods. The main fish catches come from artificial reservoirs, rivers, and lakes, with top species including carp (Cyprinus carpio), trout (Salmo trutta), and grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Historically, the fishing industry in Tajikistan expanded during the Soviet era, when large reservoirs like Kayrakkum and Nurek were constructed, enabling aquaculture and commercial fishing to develop. Today, most fish production is based on aquaculture in these reservoirs, with wild catches supplementing the market. Despite challenges such as outdated infrastructure and environmental pressures, the industry continues to provide employment and nutrition, especially in rural communities.
