Top Pitcairn Fish Catches

Pitcairn Island, the smallest and most remote British Overseas Territory in the Pacific Ocean, has a modest fishing industry primarily focused on subsistence and small-scale local consumption rather than commercial export. The top fish catches around Pitcairn include species such as yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), and various reef fish like parrotfish and grouper. Historically, the island’s isolated population—descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions—has relied on the surrounding rich marine environment for sustenance, using traditional handlines and small boats. Due to its tiny population and limited infrastructure, Pitcairn’s fishing remains artisanal, with efforts in recent years focused on sustainable practices and marine conservation, including the establishment of the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve in 2016, one of the world’s largest protected areas, which has further limited large-scale fishing activities to preserve the unique marine biodiversity.
