Top Mayotte Fish Catches

Mayotte, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique, boasts a vibrant fishing industry deeply rooted in local tradition and sustenance. The island’s rich marine biodiversity supports a variety of top fish catches, including tuna (notably yellowfin and skipjack), grouper, snapper, and swordfish, as well as smaller pelagic species like mackerel and bonito. Artisanal fishing dominates the industry, with small-scale fishers using traditional boats and handlines to supply local markets. While fishing has long been a cornerstone of Mayotte’s economy and culture, the industry faces challenges such as overfishing, competition with industrial fleets from neighboring regions, and the need for sustainable management practices to preserve fish stocks for future generations.
