Greenland’s fishing industry is the backbone of its economy, accounting for over 90% of its exports and providing vital employment in coastal communities. The cold, nutrient-rich waters surrounding Greenland are especially abundant in shrimp (particularly the Northern prawn, *Pandalus borealis*) and Greenland halibut (*Reinhardtius hippoglossoides*), which are the country’s top fish catches by volume and value. Other important species include Atlantic cod, snow crab, and capelin. Commercial fishing began in earnest in the early 20th century, initially focused on cod, but shifted toward shrimp and halibut as cod stocks declined in the late 20th century. Today, Greenland’s fishing industry is highly regulated, with quotas and sustainability measures in place to protect fish stocks and ensure the long-term viability of this crucial sector.
